Ours is an area rich in history
Our accessibility to bigger cities is an advantage, but we don't mean to imply that you need to travel far for wonderful history, culture and entertainment.
Historic sites are everywhere, preserved and revered forts, mansions, theaters, iron furnaces, one-room schoolhouses, covered bridges, churches and museums.
Altoona's Railroaders Memorial Museum documents the development of the world's largest railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Visual and performing arts thrive.
The Blair County Arts Foundation is the clearinghouse for our local live theaters, orchestra, chorale, music association and dance. They also own the restored, historic
Mishler Theatre in Altoona.
The city's
Jaffa Shrine facility hosts circuses, exhibits and family entertainment, while
Penn State Altoona offers plays, concerts and cultural exhibits and programs.
More opportunities are nearby, like the museum of art at
Saint Francis University and art and science museums and concert venues at
Penn State University. PSU's
Bryce Jordan Center is a 16,000-capacity arena that draws A-list entertainers and musicians.
As a rural area, of course, county fairs and heritage festivals are an annual tradition. And if browsing antique shops is your thing, you'll love the Altoona suburb of Duncansville, a mecca for antique lovers.
