School of Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science: Application Packet
Below, please find a link to an application for admission into the UPMC Altoona School of Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science Program, along with some additional information you might find useful.
This application, a copy of your most recent transcript, cover letter, resume, an acceptable transcript evaluation (if applicable) from your college or university advisor and at least three letters of recommendation must be in my office by Friday, October 14, 2016 to be considered for the class starting on or around Tuesday, July 5, 2017.
Personal interviews with selected applicants will be held during September, October and November, therefore, prospective students are encouraged to submit a completed application packet as early as possible. Applicants not receiving an interview request may assume that their applications will not be given further consideration.
Following the interviews, the Admission Committee will meet to select the class and a letter of acceptance or declination will be sent in December 2016.
Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon successful completion of all pre-clinical requirements, including the junior year (if applicable), and upon the findings of a complete physical examination, drug screen and background check as performed by UPMC Altoona Employee Health before the start of the school year.
Admission to the program is granted without reference to race, religion, ancestry, age, physical handicap, sex or other legally protected classification.
Tuition for the School of Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science is presently set at one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars ($1,250) six hundred and twenty five ($625) of which is due the first week of the first semester, and the remaining six hundred and twenty five ($625) the first week of the second semester. This is subject to change. A one hundred fifty dollar ($150.00) deposit is required at the time of acceptance to hold the student's spot in the upcoming class.
Books will be provided by the UPMC Altoona School of Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science at an approximate cost of $875. Payment is due on the first day of the first semester.
Housing for one year costs the average student approximately $6,600. However, many of the students from prior years have opted for rooming together, which decreases expenses.
Lunch up to $4.50 will be provided at no cost to the student through the hospital cafeteria.
Protective gear including laboratory coats must be worn while the students are in the clinical rotations. This protective gear will be provided by the hospital. A $150 laboratory fee will be assessed to the student and will be due the first week of school. Uniforms (lab coats/jackets, shoes, etc.) worn during the clinical rotations are to be provided by the student. The hospital dress code must be followed.
A $150 activity fee will be assessed to the student. This fee will cover the cost of graduation and will be due the first week of the second semester.
POLICY FOR TUITION REFUND FOR WITHDRAWAL
Students who withdraw from the UPMC Altoona School of Medical Technology prior to the beginning of the term forfeit the $150.00 deposit fee.
Students who withdraw from program after the beginning of the term will be given a refund for tuition paid as follows.
Within 11-15 days — Refund 50%
Within 16-30 days — Refund 25%
Over 31 school days — No Refund
