School of Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science: Application Packet

General Considerations

Curriculum
The internship year is a 12 month structured program which counts as a fourth year toward a baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science. Upon successful completion of the program, thirty-two (32) credits will be awarded to the student in the disciplines listed below:

Faculty
Members of the faculty are CAP Board -Certified Pathologist and experienced ASCP/NCA Certified Medical Technologist / Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

The pathologist achieves medical relevancy by doing case history studies both in the classroom and review of patient charts during postmortem exams.

ASCP and NCA Certification - after satisfactory completion of the internship year, the student is eligible for examinations administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.





Application Requirements

  1. Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

  2. Three years (90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours) of college work at any accredited college or university, to include:

  3. Sixteen (16) semester hours or twenty-four quarter hours of biology credit, including a course in Microbiology or Bacteriology, which is acceptable toward a degree in biology

  4. Sixteen (16) semester hours or twenty-four quarter hours of chemistry credit, including a course in Biochemistry and/or Organic Chemistry, which is acceptable toward a degree in chemistry

  5. A minimum of one (1) semester of college mathematics

  6. An approved course in Immunology

  7. A grade point average of not less than 2.5 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics (science GPA)

  8. Acceptable transcript evaluation from your University/College (if applicable)




Admission Criteria

  1. Successful completion of all application requirements

  2. A personal interview, during which the applicant's intellectual skills and aptitudes, motivational characteristics, knowledge and experience, and personality traits are assessed

  3. Careful consideration of references, especially those from college instructors and advisors

  4. A complete physical examination that includes a drug screen and background check — Note: The physical examination will be performed by the Altoona Regional Health System Employee Health, at no cost to the student.
