Patient Testing Procedures
This area of the web site is devoted to important information for patients scheduled for procedures at Altoona Regional Health System. If your doctor has ordered a test or procedure for you, this area will help you to prepare for your appointment. If you have any additional questions, always contact your doctor's office. 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays
Closed on Holidays.

Pre surgery information
Thank you for choosing Altoona Regional to meet your surgical needs. Your physician and you have discussed and scheduled your surgery. Altoona Regional staff will make every effort to see that your pre-surgery questions and concerns are answered. Our goal is to make your surgery as convenient and comfortable as possible.

Testing needed prior to your surgery
Pre testing:
Your surgeon will give you a specific date and time to come to the hospital for your pre-operative testing/pre-anesthesia evaluation. If you were not given a specific date and time, you should call the pre testing office at the numbers listed below to schedule.

Your preoperative testing/pre anesthesia evaluation should be done at least a week prior to your surgery.

Surgery at Altoona Hospital Campus or Surgery Center:

Pre testing is located on the 5th Floor of the Outpatient Center at Altoona Hospital Campus, across the hall from the Glover Memorial Library.
Use the elevators in the main lobby or the parking garage to reach the 5th Floor.

Surgery at Bon Secours Hospital Campus

Location:
Pre testing is located on the 3rd Floor in the Same Day Surgery Unit. You can enter the Same Day Surgery Unit from the Eight Ave. entrance.

Please bring all your medications to the hospital when you come for your pre testing, including your vitamins and herbs.

Important: Please bring all papers given to you in your surgeon's office.

Pre surgery instructions
Alcohol: No alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your surgery.
Breast Feeding: Should pump at least one feeding post surgery and discard.
Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing. Wear something easy to get on after your surgery.
Contact Lenses: Contacts cannot be worn to the operating room.
Dentures: Dentures cannot be worn to the operating room.
Glasses: Glasses cannot be worn to the operating room.
Hair: No hairspray or hairpins.
Hearing aides: Hearing aides can be worn in the operating room.
Jewelry: No jewelry is permitted. Body piercing, such as tongue or belly rings, must be removed before surgery or your surgery may be cancelled.
Makeup: Remove all makeup.
Nail Polish: Must remove the polish from one finger on each hand and one toe on each foot.
Power of Attorney: Bring a copy of the power of attorney.
Smoking: Do not smoke for 24 hours prior to your surgery.
Sleep Apnea: If you have a c-pap or bi-pap machine, bring it to Altoona Regional the morning of your surgery.
Valuables: Leave all valuables at home.
If staying overnight: Bring any personal items needed for your stay. Bring a copy of advanced directive or living will.
Going Home: Must have someone to drive you home after your surgery.
Papers: Bring all papers you received from your doctor.
Illness: Notify your doctor if you have any changes in your health, such as a sore throat, fever, or dental problems before coming to Altoona Regional.

Physician's Instructions
Follow your physician's special instructions for your surgery, such as a betadine douche or fleets enema.

Medications
  • Bring all medications to Altoona Regional when you come for your preoperative testing, including vitamins and herbs.
  • Be sure to stop taking all vitamins and herbs at least one week prior to your surgery.
  • Morning of your surgery: Refer to the instruction sheet you were given during your pre-anesthesia evaluation. This will inform you which medications should be taken on the day of your surgery.
  • Do not take any diabetic medications (insulin or oral) on the day of your surgery, except for Lantus insulin (take as directed). Insulin pumps: Leave as is.
  • Ask your doctor when to stop taking aspirin or plavix.
  • Eating and Drinking
    Eating: You are not to eat anything after midnight the night prior to your surgery.
    Drinking: You may drink no more than 16 ounces (two glasses) of clear liquids up to two hours before you come to Altoona Regional.
    You may have:
  • Coffee, without milk
  • Tea, without milk
  • Water
  • Clear juices
  • Jell-O
  • Broth
  • Soda
  • No gum, hard candy, mints or ice the morning of your surgery.
    Exceptions: You will be given specific instructions.

    Infants and Children
    Please review the following preparations for the night before your child's surgery.

    For Infants:
  • No solid food after midnight.
  • Infants may have formula or breast milk up to five hours prior to arrival.
  • Infants may have four ounces of clear fluids up to two hours prior to arrival.
  • The clear liquids must be finished two hours prior to arrival.
  • Clear liquids include water, clear juice, pedialyte or glucose water.
  • For Children:
  • No solid food or milk after midnight.
  • Children may have up to eight ounces of clear liquids up to two hours prior to arrival.
  • Clear liquids include water, clear juice, plain Jell-O, Popsicles, clear broth or pedialyte.
  • Children should finish the clear liquids two hours prior to arrival.
  • At least one parent or legal guardian must remain at the hospital during the surgery!

    Only two adults should accompany your child to Altoona Regional. Please do not bring other children with you on the day of the surgery.

    If your child has a favorite pillow, blanket, stuffed animal, special cup, bottle, or pacifier, please bring it with you on the day of surgery. Other valuables should be left at home.

    Custody Papers: Must bring copy of custody papers for the chart.

    Altoona Hospital Campus

    Time of Surgery
    A nurse will call you between 4 and 7 p.m. the day before your surgery.
    You may call (814) 889-6652 the day before your surgery between 4 and 7 p.m. to get your time.
    If your surgery is on Monday, you will be called the Friday prior to your surgery.
    If your surgery is the day after a holiday, you will be called the last weekday prior to your surgery.

    Parking
    Parking Garage: Park on any level and take the elevator to the 7th Floor. Cost is $2; pay when you leave. Must pay with a dollar bill or four quarters.
    Valet Parking: Valet parking is located in the front of the Outpatient Center. Service is available between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Cost is $3; free for handicapped patients. Enter the main lobby and turn left at the information desk. Take the first elevator to the 7th Floor of the Outpatient Center.

    Where to report the day of your surgery
    7th Floor of the Outpatient Center, next to the parking garage.
    Children age 17 and under will report to the pediatric unit on the 5th Floor of the E-Building.
    Exceptions: You will be told when you are called with your time for surgery where to report the morning of your surgery.




    Altoona Regional Surgery Center

    Time of your surgery
    A nurse will call you the day prior to your surgery.
    You may call (814) 889-7700 with questions.

    Parking
    Parking is available on-site at 800 Howard Ave.
    Look for signage surrounding the Altoona Regional Surgery Center.
    Enter the building under the canopy, located off of Ninth Street.

    Where to report the day of your surgery
    Report to the Altoona Regional Surgery Center, 800 Howard Ave.
    Enter the building under the portico, which is located off of Ninth Street.
    Look for signage surrounding the Altoona Regional Surgery Center.




    Bon Secours Hospital Campus

    Time of your surgery
    The operating room will call you the day before your surgery.
    If you are not notified by 3 p.m. the day before your surgery, please call (814) 944-4416 between 3 and 6 p.m.
    If your surgery is on Monday, you will be called the Friday prior to your surgery.
    If your surgery is on the day after a holiday, you will be called the last weekday prior to your surgery.

    Parking
    Parking is available across the street from the Eighth Ave. entrance.

    Where to report the day of your surgery
    Go to the Same Day Surgery Unit on the 3rd Floor.
    You can enter the Same Day Surgery Unit at the Eighth Avenue entrance.



    Questions

    Our questions:
    Please be aware that you will be asked the same questions over and over again by different members of the health team. This is for your safety!

    Your questions:
    Do not hesitate to ask questions about the care you are receiving.

    It is your right and responsibility to know about the care being provided to you.

    Questions to ask your doctor prior to your surgery:
    Are there foods or drinks I should avoid?

    How should I care for my incision?

    What medications should I take or not take?

    What should I do if I have pain?

    When can I drive or return to work?

    Are there exercises or activities I should avoid?

    Questions prior to going home:
    A nurse will give you discharge instructions prior to leaving the hospital. Since you received anesthesia, it is better to have someone with you when given the instructions.

    Pulmonary and hyperbaric medicine

    Pulmonary Rehabilitation
    Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary specialty at Altoona Regional. You may be short of breath, have a cough or diagnosed with lung disease. The staff of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, along with your physician, is prepared to monitor and guide you as you build strength and endurance for a better quality of life.

    Most of our patients enjoy more activity, independence and peace of mind after participating in pulmonary rehabilitation. You'll feel stronger, breathe easier and visit the hospital less.

    Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation is designed to help you with the day-to-day management of chronic pulmonary conditions including:
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Asthma
  • Occupational Lung Disease
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation may be ordered before and after lung volume reduction surgery or lung transplantation.

    Pulmonary Rehabilitation may be recommended for coal miners following an evaluation through the Black Lung Clinic.

    Your Personalized Program & Health Care Team
    Pulmonary Rehabilitation services will be designed especially for you and may include visits with:
  • Physician
  • Nurse
  • Respiratory therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Recreational therapist
  • Dietitian
  • Rehabilitation sessions are held two days a week for six weeks.
