Center for Cancer Care: Radiation Oncology

Altoona Regional's Center for Cancer Care provides Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) technology to cancer patients. Unlike other facilities, both planning and treatment are performed on-site at our center. The bulk of our IMRT use is for prostate cancer patients. Through the use of our technology, we can preserve as much of the function of the rectum and bladder as possible while treating the prostate.
We also have the area's first three-dimensional computerized treatment planning system. This allows us to provide the maximum possible radiation dose to fight tumor growth while lowering the dose to surrounding healthy tissue. Our center offers two of the latest linear accelerators that provide the best, most accurate delivery of radiation, concentrating dosage on the cancer cells. Other available treatments include but are not limited to high-dose-rate brachytherapy and a multi-leaf collimator. At Altoona Regional, patients will see the most experienced cancer experts in the area. Joining our board-certified radiation oncology physician on staff are radiation therapists, nurses certified in oncology, licensed practical nurses, board-certified dosimetrists, board-certified physicists and secretarial staff. Our team is the largest radiation oncology staff in the region. Our staff is also the region's most experienced, with more than 300 years of service in radiation oncology, or an average of 20 years experience per person. This caring team of professionals will stand by you through detection, treatment and recovery.
